Looking for proof it isn't your fault you missed the trout; here is living proof that the trout most likely missed your fly. For years I have tried to document this very common phenomenon, but the 1/100th of a second milli-moments are elusive to even the most adroit shutter master much less, a hack like myself. But the drive for a desired truth despite it's factuality is a neurosis some of us proudly bare for the sake of plausible deniability. What I lack in hook setting skill, I make up for with my power of rationalization.
